Manufacturer description #1
Helping to pave the way for our RF-S lens line, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM is an all-around lens that is ideal for creative photography and movies, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM combines legendary Canon Optics with a versatile zoom range and quiet operation for flexibility on the go. This lens was designed with smaller APS-C sensors in mind, and when attached to a full frame EOS R camera, automatically enables the 1.6x crop mode. It offers 100% x 100% Dual Pixel CMOS AF coverage for APS-C sensors, and 80% x 80% Dual Pixel CMOS AF coverage for Full Frame sensors (in crop mode). Delivering remarkable performance for everyday use, the lead screw-type stepping motor (STM) helps ensure smooth autofocus and quiet operation, letting you capture videos with great audio and minimal background noise so you won't distract your subject in a quiet photo environment. Optical Image Stabilization provides up to 4.5 stops of correction, and up to 6.5 stops with Coordinated IS. This advanced image stabilization can result in sharper photos with minimal blur, even in low light situations. For landscapes, portraits, sports, videos and everything in between, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM provides great versatility with its magnificent optics, comprehensive zoom range and flexible design.
With high performance and high magnification, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM puts a versatile zoom range of 18-150mm (35mm equivalent coverage 29-240mm) into a lens that gives you flexibility on the go. It was designed for Canon APS-C cameras, but is compatible with the entire EOS R-series full-frame line. When attached to a full frame EOS R camera, an automatic 1.6x sensor crop is enabled, matching the full-frame sensor to the RF-S lens's coverage. Its optical system and simple operation ensure high image quality while keeping the lens easy to use, so it's simply there when you need it. The extended zoom range makes this a perfect companion for travel or simply documenting life's experiences, for both video and still images.
Canon's stepping motor (STM) technology is especially effective at producing smooth, quiet autofocus during video recording. This lens is a perfect choice for multi-media content creation, with its zoom range and quiet autofocus. And, STM focus drive provides responsive, quick - and exceptionally quiet - AF during still-image shooting, as well.
For consistently sharp results, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM features built-in optical Image Stabilization, providing enhanced shake reduction for up to 4.5 stops* of shake correction. When paired with an EOS R-series camera that has In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), the Coordinated IS allows for up to 6.5 stops of correction. This means more reliable handheld performance and clearer detail in low-light situations, without having to increase the ISO or decrease the shutter speed. Because of its enhanced stabilization, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM can also help minimize the need for a tripod.
Taking advantage of the Canon RF lens mount, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM lens offers great optical quality. Its optical design includes two aspheric elements, one Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) glass element for high image quality from center to corner, and Canon Super Spectra Coating to minimize ghosting and flare.
Manufacturer description #2
The RF-S18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM is good for close-up shots. When using AF, it has a closest focusing distance of just 17cm (at focal lengths 18mm to 35mm), when shooting at 50mm, it has a maximum magnification of up to 0.44 times—very close to that of macro lenses which have a maximum magnification of at least 0.5 times.
Shooting in manual focus mode gets you even closer, shrinking the closest focusing distance to 12cm (at focal lengths 18mm to 35mm) and increasing the maximum magnification to 0.59x (at 35mm). This achieves the unique Centre Focus Macro effect, with a dynamic bokeh effect on the edges of the image.
From the editor
Optically the lens is identical to the EF-M 18-150/3.5-6.3 IS STM. However, the fact that the new lens has the same optical design as its older counterpart does not mean at all that its other characteristics are the same: the manufacturer managed to improve the closest focusing distance and even slightly increase the effectiveness of the optical image stabilizer.
In AF mode, the closest focusing distance is 0.17m at focal lengths of 18-49mm, 0.18m at focal lengths of 50-149mm, 0.45m at focal length of 150mm.
