Manufacturer description #1
Compact, versatile, speedy and affordable, the new RF16mm F2.8 STM lens is a terrific complement to any EOS R series digital camera. Offering an ultra-wide angle of view and a bright f/2.8 aperture, it's an excellent choice whether taking interior photos in tight spaces, seeking out the perfect landscape, or as the perfect webcam lens when used in combination with an EOS camera and EOS Webcam Utility on a video call. With a 16mm F2.8 lens, you can experiment with enhancing perspectives, capturing starscapes, or with the close focusing distance of 5.11 inches, get up close to your subject while still keeping the background more visible. Video users will find this ultra-wide lens a natural for vlogging, especially with its supremely light weight.
With its remarkable combination of optical excellence and refined performance, all in a small package that's easy to bring most anywhere, the RF16mm F2.8 STM is a stellar companion to any EOS R series digital camera.
A fixed ultra-wide angle lens changes how you see your image before you even press the shutter button. Your enhanced perspective and expansive views create a unique and engaging look of each photo. Whether you are capturing an awe-inspiring starscape, portraits with fun and unique distortion or simply a group selfie while on vacation, the combination of the open f/2.8 lens and ultra wide-angle 16mm field of view makes this a light weight and versatile lens to pack anywhere you go.
A bright f/2.8 lens combined with the full-frame sensor of each EOS R series digital camera allows for fast shutter speeds in low light with less noise and the ability to beautifully blur the background in close-up shooting or video recording.
Using a stepping motor in the RF16mm F2.8 STM lens aids in natural focus while following a subject using Servo AF in still photography, or clean transitions when repositioning to another subject with Movie Servo AF in video applications. Canon's STM focus motors are especially renowned for their smoothness in focus changes during live video recording, as well as brisk AF during still-image shooting.
The compact size and light weight of the lens makes it an ideal companion on long hikes and excursions. It is also handy for a day out in the city and when you want to be creative with multiple prime lenses.
Getting close to your subject with the RF16mm F2.8 STM lens means purposefully distorting your subject, creating an enjoyable new look while also keeping more of the background in frame for visual interest.
The RF16mm F2.8 STM lens incorporates a control/focus ring on the lens barrel. As a Control Ring, it can directly adjust numerous settings including shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation and more. Located towards the end of the lens, the control/focus ring has a tactile, easily distinguished surface and provides tangible feedback for confident use while looking through the viewfinder.
You'll have no problem when shooting close-up images in getting that creative, fun and pleasantly smooth out-of-focus background blur we all love with the circular 7-blade aperture. Subjects will stand out, and the background provides a beautiful backdrop that's visually appealing in itself.
Manufacturer description #2
Small and lightweight with a wallet-friendly price, the lens is a great addition to your kit not just for capturing grand landscapes, but also for vlogging, travel, wefies, and other scenes that you may encounter on casual walkarounds.
All RF mount standard zoom kit lenses start at 24mm, which offers wide enough coverage for most scenes. But there are situations where you would want to capture a wider area or achieve a stronger wide-angle perspective, and that calls for an even wider lens.
Canon has two ultra-wide-angle constant aperture zoom lenses designed for professional users on the RF mount: The RF14-35mm f/4L IS USM and the RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM. But if you’re on a smaller budget or if portability is your priority, the RF16mm f/2.8 STM is a very appealing choice.
Conventionally, a 16mm ultra-wide-angle prime lens would be bigger and heavier than a 50mm prime lens in the same class. However, the RF16mm f/2.8 STM is around the same size and weight as the RF50mm f/1.8 STM.
The RF16mm f/2.8 STM utilises a front-focusing system as well as a design that places the aperture diaphragm closer to the front. This makes it possible to use a smaller front lens element compared to conventional ultra-wide-angle lenses, hence achieving a closest focusing distance of 13cm, capturing subjects at a 0.26x maximum magnification.
The large mount diameter and short back focus distance of the RF mount made it possible to place a large lens element close to the image sensor. This not only improves image quality at the image edges, but also makes the compact size of the RF16mm f/2.8 STM possible.
Various forms of lens aberrations are corrected using one aspherical lens element, which also works in tandem with the camera’s digital Lens Aberration Correction function to correct the distortions that happen more frequently on wide-angle lenses.
Ultra-wide-angle lenses are prone to distortions and astigmatism caused by aberrations, which cannot be completely corrected through optical design alone. The powerful image processing capabilities of the EOS R system cameras enable a high level of digital lens aberration correction to supplement optical correction efforts. Working together, they ensure that even the more “budget” RF lenses like the RF16mm f/2.8 STM can achieve high quality images.
From the editor
A compact and lightweight ultra-wide angle prime lens that is unmatched in other 35mm full frame mirrorless systems as of the date of announcement. Only the Sony FE 14/1.8 GM and Sigma 14/1.8 DG HSM | A can be considered the closest analogs in terms of focal length, but these are large and heavy expensive professional models that are in a completely different class than this interesting hobbyist lens. Canon has once again released a unique and very successful lens that will take its rightful place in the arsenals of many enthusiast photographers, especially those who are into travel photography but also do not mind recording a video. The closest focusing distance of 13cm allows taking ultra-wide angle close-ups and only adds extra points.
Internal or rear focusing, as well as weather sealing would be great for this lens, however, these features are usually available only with L-series lenses.
