Manufacturer description #1

Two UD glass elements used in this lens correct chromatic aberration and substantially reduce the secondary spectrum. But yielding images of excellent color balance and high contrast is not enough. Hence the inclusion of the Rear-group focusing and Vari-pitch cam systems which serve to good focusing accuracy and simplify handling. Focusing can be accomplished with greater ease because the overall length of the lens does not change as you focus - thanks to the rear-group focusing design.

A high performance lens in all respects makes this 300mm f/4 ideal for sports and documentary work.

Manufacturer description #2

This is a high-end lens utilizing the “UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) Glass” lens element with anomalous dispersion. By using two UD glass lens elements, the secondary spectrum that tends to occur in telephoto lenses is minimized, and excellent image quality can be obtained for the entire frame even at maximum aperture without any image distortion due to chromatic aberration.

Moreover, this lens employs a rear focusing system, which only moves the small rear lens group, and a vari-pitch focusing system, which moves the lens group quickly at shorter distances and slows down the motion at longer distances. This achieves smooth focusing in all shooting distances without changing the overall length of the lens.

Manufacturer description #3

This superb Canon 300mm telephoto lens is ideal for following sports action and is light enough and fast enough to be hand-held under most circumstances although it is equipped with a heavy-duty tripod mount.

Using special, Canon-designed ultra-low dispersion (UD) glass created for maximum performance in this focal length, this telephoto lens is critcally sharp throughout its entire focusing range, despite its extremely high speed (f4).

Other innovations include rear-group focusing which does not require a change in the length of the lens as it is focused, maintaining good balance and handling, as well as a vari-pitch focusing system for easy, precise focusing on distant subjects.

The 300mm focal length optically shortens the distance between camera and subject, recording objects on film approximately 6X larger than would be possible with a normal, 50mm lens.

This New FD lens attaches easily to all Canon SLR cameras with a simple bayonet-type action, for fast, positive mounting .
