Manufacturer description #1

With a maximum aperture of f/2, this is the fastest EF wide-angle lens. Ideal for low-light shooting situations, this lens is also well-suited for many kinds of snapshot and travel photography. The EF 35mm f/2 can even be used as an alternative standard lens that lets you get more in the picture. The minimum focusing distance of 0.25 m/9.8 inches is useful for close-ups of nearly 1/4 life-size. The focusing system and filter size of the EF 35mm f/2 are the same as the EF 28mm f/2.8.

Manufacturer description #2

A large-aperture, compact, wide-angle lens popular with veteran photographers as an all-around, general-use lens. Utilizing a new design, an f/2 maximum aperture on a par with standard lenses is achieved with a minimal 7-element., 5-group construction. This provides an easy-to-carry compact size in addition to superb image performance. Ghosting and flare are minimized for sharp, high-contrast images. A simple extension type focusing system is employed with design considerations made to ensure well-corrected curvature of field. Another feature is a minimum focusing distance of 0.25m/0.8 ft - the shortest distance in its class.

Manufacturer description #3

The simple 7-elements, 5-groups lens construction utilising a short zoom lens design method achieves a brightness of f/2 in a lightweight and compact design. This efficient lens construction combines with a multi-layer coating treatment to achieve very clear imaging performance with virtually no ghosting or flare. The minimum focusing distance is 0.25m/0.8ft. – the shortest in its class – making it possible to take close-ups at a magnification of 0.23x, despite the wide angle of the lens.

From the editor

One of the first lenses for the Canon EOS system (please refer to the article dedicated to the Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 lens for more information on family of Canon’s lenses introduced in 1987-1990).

The lens was a popular choice as a “standard” prime lens on APS-C digital SLR cameras until the moment when optically very good Sigma 30mm F/1.4 EX DC HSM lens (2005) became the default option for this purpose.
