CANON INTRODUCES TRIO OF NEW EF LENSES AT PMA
EF 300mm f/4L IS USM, EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM and EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Supplement World's Largest Selection of Autofocus SLR Lenses
NEW ORLEANS, LA., February 20, 1997-Canon U.S.A, Inc. is once again expanding its line of EF lenses for EOS cameras with the introduction of three new products: the EF 300mm f/4L IS USM, EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM and EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. These new lenses join 48 other EF-series lenses currently available to provide EOS owners with the worldąs largest selection of autofocus SLR lenses.
Canon Adds Popular Image Stabilizer Technology to New EF 300mm f/4L IS USM
Canon made photographic history in 1995 by introducing the world's first SLR lens with a built-in image stabilizer, the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. This lens incorporates innovative technology that measures camera shake and corrects it with a built-in compensate optical system. As a result, photographers are able to shoot hand-held photos at settings up to two full shutter speeds slower than conventional lenses.
The market has swiftly and positively embraced this technology, making the EF 75-300mm IS lens one of the best-selling models in the history of the EF line.
"The overwhelming response to Canon's EF 75-300mm image stabilizing lens has confirmed that consumers have a genuine need and desire for this type of technology," said Ted Ando, director and general manager for Canon's Camera Division.
Following the success of the EF 75-300mm IS, Canon is now introducing the second EF lens with a built-in image stabilizer, the EF 300mm f/4L IS USM.
The new image stabilizing lens uses gyro sensors and a counteracting, image-stabilizing group moving in parallel, allowing photographers to extend hand-held exposure ranges by up to two full shutter speeds. Moreover, the new lens includes a "mode 2" stabilizer switch permitting lens stabilization when follow-focusing or panning subjects. This is especially beneficial for sports, nature and wildlife photography.
Similar to the existing EF 75-300mm IS lens, the EF 300mm f/4L IS incorporates a high-speed, 16-bit microcomputer to control image stabilization, autofocus and aperture functions. When the image stabilizer is turned off, a center-locking mechanism secures the image stabilizing lens-group.
This unique technology dramatically reduces the risk of getting blurred images, especially when shooting at long focal lengths with slow shutter speeds.
The traditional rule for preventing blurred images when photographing at long focal lengths is that the shutter speed be set faster than the reciprocal focal length in use. For example, using a focal length of 300mm, it is recommended to use a shutter speed of 1/350 second, or faster, to achieve sharp results. Photographers can now enjoy photographing with a 300mm focal length lens, hand-held at 1/90 second.
As with all Canon EF fixed focal length lenses, the 300mm f/4L IS lens accepts the 1.4x and 2x extenders. The image stabilizing feature can be used in conjunction with the extenders and most EOS System cameras.
The EF 300mm f/4L IS USM weighs 42.3 ounces and measures 8.7 inches in length. The EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM weighs 26.8 ounces and measures 5-3/8-inches in length.
The EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM weighs 13 ounces and measures 2-3/4-inches in length at its widest angle. All three lenses will be available at dealers nationwide in March.
Manufacturer description #2
In addition to the unrivalled optical performance, this 300mm lens is characterised by outstanding mobility thanks to the image stabilizing mechanism. In IS mode, the photographer has two options: mode 1, which is good for still shots, and mode 2, for many shots of moving objects. The optics includes two UD glass elements to thoroughly eliminate secondary spectrum. With a closest focusing distance of 1.5m/4.9ft, you can get in as close to the subject as possible in that unique way only possible with a macro lens. The image stabilizer also functions when using the Extender EF 1.4xII and Extender EF 2xII to provide that elusive 600 mm shooting capability.
Manufacturer description #3
Compact L-series telephoto lens with an Image Stabilizer which compensates for camera shake with the equivalent effect of a shutter speed two stops faster. Two Image Stabilizer modes are provided: Stabilizer Mode 1 (the same mode featured on the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM) and the new Stabilizer Mode 2 which steadies the image during horizontal or vertical panning. Mode 2 detects the panning direction automatically. The closest focusing distance is 4.9 feet (1.5 m).
Compared to other super telephoto prime lenses in the Canon EOS system
- Shortest closest focusing distance (1.50m)
- Largest magnification (1:4.17)
- One of the lightest (1190g)
- Not weather sealed, along with 8 other models
- Accepts front filters, along with 2 other models
