Next Generation Canon L-series Lenses with Image Stabilisation

Canon has introduced its unique Image Stabilising technology to four new L-series professional lenses that also incorporate new features and improved optical performance. The lenses - with focal lengths of 300mm, 400mm, 500mm and 600mm - are designed specifically for professionals or advanced amateurs and include a new AF stop feature and faster AF speed, when used with the new Canon EOS 3.

The four lenses are the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM, the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM, the EF 500mm f/4L IS USM and the EF 600mm f/4L IS USM.

The Image Stabilisation can work in two modes - Mode 1 for normal shooting or Mode 2 for panning. With Stabiliser Mode 2, the image in the viewfinder is steadied during panning, making the framing of a subject easier. This is particularly useful for moving subjects.

In order to maintain high performance, the lenses have newly designed optics for ultra-high image quality. The optical system used incorporates fluorite and UD-glass elements and a newly developed large Image Stabiliser unit to give the equivalent effect of a shutter speed two stops faster. This makes the lens especially versatile in low-light conditions and in situations where a tripod cannot be used.

The lenses consist of 17 elements in 13 groups. Aberrations prone to appear in super telephoto lenses are suppressed to an absolute minimum due to the UD glass in lens groups 2 and 3, and fluorite in group 5.

Increased sensitivity of the focusing group and inner focusing has enabled the minimum focusing distance to be shortened for each lens.

A new AF Stop feature enables the autofocus operation to be stopped at anytime. This can be used to prevent the AF from focusing on any obstruction, which may dart in front of the subject and change the desired focus point.

A ring-type USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor) provides internal rear focusing for silent and high-speed AF, with the option of full time manual focusing. Additionally, the EF 1.4x and EF 2x Extenders can be used with the lenses for extended magnification. Autofocusing is now possible when using the EOS 3 camera and an EF 2x Extender together with any of the new lenses.

The improved optical system also enables the lenses to be lighter than their predecessors. Excluding its removable tripod collar, at 2550g the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM is over 300g lighter than its predecessor. The weights of the other lenses, which all have a fixed tripod collar are: EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM 5200g, EF 500mm f/4L IS USM 3870g and EF 600mm f/4L IS USM 5200g.

The lenses are ideal for poor weather conditions; the external joints now sealed to prevent any dust or water seeping inside.

All these lenses have been completely re-designed, with various new improvements; a new 52mm drop in filter holder, focus preset feature and the lens switch panel.

For fast access to the new IS feature, Canon has kept all the lens switches on one switch panel and also slightly increased the width of the manual focus ring.

EF 500mm f/4L IS USM

The EF 500mm f/4L IS USM also incorporates the f/4 maximum aperture, larger than the f/4.5 on its predecessor. This lens is the direct result of requests made by many professionals for Canon to produce such a lens.

Manufacturer description #2

This lens has achieved such a high reputation that it has come to be known as the symbol of Canon’s professional lenses. In 1974 the FL 300mm f/2.8 SSC Fluorite lens was created, a high-performance telephoto lens with the world’s first use of fluorite in a large-aperture camera lens. That lens blazed the trail to be followed by the FD 300mm f/2.8 SSC and eventually the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM. Its innovative performance has produced numerous classic photographs in the fields of sports, journalism, and advertising. The EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM is equipped with an image stabilizing mechanism to greatly improve mobility. The optical system achieves outstanding image quality thanks to the inclusion of one fluorite lens element and two UD lens elements. Reduced weight in the focus lens group and improvements to the autofocus drive algorithm make the autofocus extremely fast, while additional functions include a new function which makes instantaneous focus adjustments as well as a new autofocus stop function. Use of magnesium and a lighter weight optical system give the lens an overall reduced weight compared to previous models, while the rubber used on the mount and switches endows the lens with outstanding dust-proof and drip-proof characteristics.

Manufacturer description #3

Telephoto lens newly equipped with an Image Stabilizer enabling hand-held shooting for easier movement. The fluorite element and two UD-glass elements effectively correct the chromatic aberrations prone to occur with telephoto lenses. With the EOS-1v and EOS-3, the AF speed becomes the world’s fastest. To reduce the overall weight and enhance portability, the lens barrel and many other exterior parts use a magnesium-alloy. Also, the detachable tripod collar revolves smoothly and locks securely.
