A Japanese Leica copy announced in September 1998, developed by Yasuhara Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and manufactured in China by the Phenix Camera Company. The world's first Leica screw mount camera with SPD TTL stop-down exposure metering, mechanical vertical-travelling metal-curtain Copal focal-plane shutter with a top speed of 1/2000th and 1/125th electronic flash synchronization. Other camera features include a die-cast aluminum body, viewfinder with 1x magnification, automatic parallax correction and "+/O/-" LEDs for exposure indication, hot show on the top plate, PC synch socket at the back of the top plate, hinged camera back for easy film loading, and a mechanical self-timer (10 sec. delay). The built-in exposure meter is powered by 2 SR44 batteries.
The T981 sparked the so-called Japanese rangefinder renaissance of the 1990s-2000s, making it an iconic model and a collector's item. Sales began in March 1999 and continued until March 2001. The exact number of bodies released is unknown, but rough estimates are 4,000-5,000 units.
No standard lens was supplied with the camera. In July 2001, the Yasuhara 50/2.8 MC was announced, but by that time production of the T981 had already ended.
