From the editor
A model that was inspired by the Nikon S2 (both in terms of design and features) and sold in 1957 by Meguro Kogaku Kogyo via the distributor Hinomaruya. The camera has a light alloy die-cast body with a matte chrome finish and rounded corners. The back is hinged for easy film loading (another Leica copy with a hinged back was the Tanack 35C / 35F). The camera has a single PC socket (F & X type) at the front. Apart from the rounded corners and hinged back, the Melcon II differs from the Nikon S2 in that it has a Leica screw mount, longer rangefinder base (70mm), and lacks a focusing wheel and shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second. Rough estimates suggest that little more than 600 bodies were produced.
The camera came with a rigid Nikkor 50/2 lens made by Nippon Kogaku (Nikon), which also apparently provided extensive technical assistance during the development of the camera. The predecessor, the Melcon, also came with this lens.
The weight is indicated for the camera body with the standard lens.
