Manufacturer description
The "ФЭД-2" camera is designed for a wide variety of shooting and can satisfy high demands of qualified amateur photographers, photo reporters and scientists.
The high resolving power of the "ФЭД-2" camera allows you to obtain impeccable enlargements of photographs to a format of 13x18cm or larger.
A wide range of shutter speeds, a fast lens, a flash synchronizer, a self-timer, diopter adjustment of the viewfinder, the light weight and small dimensions of the device make it an indispensable companion when walking, on vacation, and at home.
The ease of loading and unloading, the rangefinder combined with a viewfinder, and the ease of working with the camera make the ФЭД-2 camera accessible even to an inexperienced amateur.
The simultaneity of winding the shutter and feeding the film ensures quick preparation of the camera for shooting and eliminates the possibility of erroneous (double) shooting of the exposed frame.
The detachable back makes it easier to load the camera with film, simplifies checking the adjustment of interchangeable lenses to the camera, and makes it easy to unload the camera without completely shooting all the film.
The "ФЭД-2" camera works with perforated film 35mm wide. It is loaded with a cassette holding 1.6m of film. Every loading makes it possible to take 36 shots.
The "ФЭД-2" camera is supplied with a cassette that automatically opens when the camera back is locked. It is also possible to use other types of cassettes.
The rangefinder of the device is mechanically connected to the lens, this ensures accurate focusing of the lens when combining images in the rangefinder. The location of the rangefinder in the field of view of the viewfinder speeds up and facilitates the shooting process, which is especially important when photographing moving subjects, and guarantees the accuracy of the focusing and the selection of frame boundaries at the time of shooting. The diopter adjustment mechanism allows the viewfinder-rangefinder of the device to be adjusted according to the photographer’s vision within +/-2 diopters, which significantly increases the accuracy of the rangefinder.
The standard lens for the ФЭД-2 camera is a lens with a focal length of 5cm. The camera is equipped with an "ИНДУСТАР-26М" lens, which is screwed into the camera’s lens mount. The thread of the mount allows using of interchangeable photographic lenses.
A self-timer built into the camera allows the photographer to participate in the scene being photographed or take photographs of himself.
The film index on the camera frees the amateur photographer from having to remember the type and sensitivity of the film loaded into the camera.
The ФЭД-2 camera has a device for connecting flashes.
The mechanism for returning the film to the cassette makes it possible to reload the device with another cassette with a new film, under normal, not very bright lighting.
There is a tripod socket on the bottom plate of the camera for mounting the camera on a tripod and for securing it in a case.

From the editor
This was the first in-house development of the Kharkov Machine-Building Plant "FED" (USSR), which replaced the FED (the Soviet LEICA II copy). 1,632,600 cameras were produced from 1955 to 1970.
The FED-2 differs from the previous model in the following: it has a removable back (which makes loading the camera easier), a combined viewfinder-rangefinder with an increased base and diopter adjustment, flash synchronization (from 1956), and a self-timer (from 1958).
Please note that the first batches of the FED-2, produced from 1955 to 1956, did not have a flash synchronization and a self-timer. These batches differ from all subsequent cameras in the inscription "Завод им. Ф. Э. Дзержинского" on the top plate, and the following set of shutter speeds: 1/25, 1/50, 1/100, 1/200, 1/500 and B, like the later batches of the first FED.
From 1957, the "Индустар-26М" 52.4/2.8 was supplied as a standard lens; at the same time, the flange focal distance of the camera was standardized (28.8mm). From 1963, some cameras were supplied with the "Индустар-61" 52/2.8 standard lens.
In 1959, the progression of shutter speeds was changed according to the GOST: 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500 and B.
The weight and dimensions are indicated with the "Индустар-26М" lens.
