Manufacturer description #1
Like the flagship Canon F-1, the FTb was compatible with FD lenses. It was a mass-market camera having the same basic features as the F-1.
Like the F-1, it had maximum-aperture TTL metering, match-needle exposure adjustment, and high-precision 12% partial metering at the center. Being a mid-tier 35mm SLR camera, the FTb was well received by many amateur photographers. The FTb also allowed stop-down TTL metering (match needle) for FL lenses and situations when stop-down viewing was required.
Manufacturer description #2
FAST, CONVENIENT OPERATION
a. The FTb helps the user concentrate on his pictures rather than on the camera because of its fast, convenient handling and metering operation. For a bright viewfinder image, full-aperture metering is possible with all FD series lenses; stopped-down metering with FL series and R series lenses is also quite convenient.
b. Even if the photographer is a novice, the FTb's simple match-needle type of exposure selection is easy to master.
CENTRAL AREA SPOT METERING SYSTEM IS EXCELLENT FOR ACCURACY
a. In difficult lighting situations, such as snow scenes, beach scenes or backlighting, the central area spot metering system of the FTb (patterned after that of the F-1) is outstandingly accurate, because it measures only the central 12% of the viewfinder area, for great selectivity.
b. The 12% metering area in the FTb remains constant, no matter what focal length lenses are used, and there is no need to index for maximum aperture when changing lenses.
c. Meter needle, aperture needle and shutter speed are all visible in the FTb's viewfinder, so the eye need never leave the eyepiece, and the subject can be framed accurately, even when the action's at its peak.
UNSURPASSED SERIES OF CANON LENSES
a. Sports, scenics, wildlife, science - any photographic subject is within the FTb owner's grasp using the wide range of nearly 40 interchangeable Canon FD and FL series lenses from 7.5mm Fish Eye to 1,200mm Super Telephoto. Each of these fine lenses is unequalled for optical perfection.
b. All Canon lenses are exceptionally free from flare and high in contrast, thanks to their exclusive Canon Spectra and Super Spectra (multiple) Coatings.
c. Canon has incorporated the Floating System into many of its lenses for extra quality at close-up as well as normal shooting distances .
d. All Canon lenses are as compact as possible, for added convenience in traveling and handling.
UNIQUE CANON AUTO TUNING (CAT) SYSTEM FOR FLASH
a. The Canon Auto Tuning System with Speedlite 133D, Flash Auto Ring A2 or B2 for automatic electronic flash is ideal for perfect, carefree flash photography. To get a proper flash exposure, the user need only focus and match needles in the finder, then shoot. It's that simple. It works according to the camera-to-subject distance (signalled by the lens) and state of charge of the flash. So it can't be thrown off either by low state of charge or by objects coming between camera and subject. Because it works according to distance, flash is always correctly exposed, even when the subject's tones are unusually light or dark.
b. The following Flash-Auto Rings are to be used with the designated lenses:
Flash-Auto Ring A2 - FD 50mm f/1.8, FD 35mm f/3.5, FD 35mm f/2
Flash-Auto Ring B2 - FD 50mm f/1.4, FD 35mm f/3.5, FD 35mm f/2
SUPER-FAST LOADING WITH EXCLUSIVE QL MECHANISM
a. Canon's exclusive QL quick loading system takes any standard 35mm film cassette, and makes loading as simple as aligning the leader, closing the back and advancing the film. It ends loading errors forever.
FTb BOOSTER FOR LOW LIGHT-VERSATILITY
a. The Booster for the FTb extends metering sensitivity down to EV-3.5 (f/1.2, 15 sec.) with ASA 100 film. This makes it perfect for low light photography and close-up photography, macrophotography or photomicrography, where light falloff may be great due to long bellows extensions.
COMPLETE LINE OF ACCESSORIES AVAILABLE
a. Whatever the subject, there are Canon accessories that can help the FTb accomplish it. The FTb owner can choose from an array of equipment for macro and close-up work, copy work and any type of filtration requirement.
