From the editor
A Japanese Leica copy sold from 1957 to 1958 by Misuzu Kogaku Kogyo. A successor of the Chiyotax IIIF, previously produced by Reise Camera Company. A budget copy of the Leica IIId (with some modifications) for those who would like to use a Leica-type camera for casual photography. The camera has a light alloy die-cast body with a matte chrome finish and rounded corners. There are double PC sync sockets on the front. Rough estimates suggest that little more than 600 bodies were produced.
The camera body was accompanied by the Misuzu Kogaku ALTANON H.C. 1:2 f=5cm lens of the Sonnar type with the closest focusing distance of 1.5 ft (the rangefinder coupling only works from 3.5 ft). Early batches of the Altanon were produced by Tanaka Kogaku (see their chrome Tanar 50/2 H.C.), then production of the lens was entrusted to another manufacturer (such lenses can be identified by the prefix "Y" in the serial number and small dashes instead of dots on the aperture scale), and at some point, the Altanon began to be produced by Misuzu Kogaku Kogyo itself. The later version, almost identical to the black Tanar 50/2 H.C., can be distinguished from earlier versions by its black barrel with chrome aperture ring, base mount and focusing lever, 12 aperture blades, and the "M" prefix in the serial number.
The weight and dimensions are indicated for the camera body with the standard lens.
