The Takumar 4/35 has 4 lens elements in 4 groups. Most Asahi literature says 5/4, but that is for the 3.5/35,
I did find a drawing of the optical formula of the Takumar 35mm F/4 on Frank Mechelhoff’s website, which clearly shows 4 elements in 4 groups but the source of that drawing is unknown (and this is a problem).
On the other hand, How to operate your Heiland Pentax H2 operating manual (PUB. 850343) and Heiland Pentax H1/H3 operating manual not only provide information about the number of elements and groups, but also show the optical formula of this lens, which consists of 5 elements in 4 groups, according to these manuals. How to operate your Heiland Pentax H2 operating manual (PUB. 850343) also contains the drawing of the optical formula of the Auto-Takumar 35mm F/3.5 which also consists of 5 elements in 4 groups but with slightly different shapes.
According to the Takumar Field Guide website, “the optical design is retro-focus tessā-gata (Tessar type) with 5 elements in 4 groups as illustrated in the repair manual (Asahi Pentax 1967). (The last group is a tiny doublet often counted as one element.)”
Unfortunately, I was not able to find that repair manual to make sure.
